Our libraries service is giving Plymouth children a mission sign up to read six books this summer for the Summer Reading Challenge 2019.
The theme this year is Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
Every child who signs up to read six books over the summer holiday will get a collectable mission folder to keep a record of their challenge journey – and if they complete it they will be presented with a medal at their library and a certificate during their school assembly.
Children can choose any books they like – novels, fact books, joke books, eBooks and audiobooks all count, just as long as they are borrowed from the library. It’s free to sign up and there are stickers and prizes to collect along the way.
The challenge is aimed at four to 11-year-olds and there’s a mini-challenge for the under fours.
Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said “The Summer Reading Challenge is a great way for children to maintain their reading skills and confidence over the long summer holiday. In 2018 we had our most successful year when over 5,800 children took part. It’s free to sign up to the challenge and children and families can join in with free activities at all libraries throughout the summer.”
Space Chase launches in libraries across Plymouth on Saturday 13 July and runs until Saturday 14 September.
